Florida Governor Support Investigation Into Dr. Fauci

Florida Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins expressed support for state Attorney General James Uthmeier’s investigation into former White House COVID-19 adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci. Collins emphasized that the courts should resolve the matter. “Let’s get this in the court of law,” Collins stated to Newsweek. “I fully support what Attorney General Uthmeier is doing. I applaud him for leading on this issue.”

Fauci recently appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. During the session, he invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, declining to answer questions led by Chairman Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican. Fauci stated he was following his legal counsel’s advice.

Attorney General Uthmeier announced on social media: “Fauci’s lack of candor to Congress is unbelievable. My office is launching an investigation into Dr. Fauci. It’s past time we get the truth of what happened during COVID.”

Fauci’s attorney, David Schertler, opted not to comment on the investigation. Meanwhile, Uthmeier’s office intends to determine if Fauci violated any state laws. The investigation aims to uncover what Fauci knew during the pandemic, whether he misled the public, and if Floridians suffered financial or physical harm. It will also look into whether Fauci could face liability under Florida law.

“The people deserve accountability,” Collins said. “This is about the lives altered and the businesses lost. Floridians must see their government and leaders doing the right thing.”

The investigation represents another chapter in the debate over the government’s COVID-19 response. Fauci, formerly the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, became a prominent figure during the crisis. He often faced Republican criticism over federal COVID-19 guidelines, such as mask mandates and questions about the virus’s origins.

A Senate hearing brought these issues to light again following the release of over 1,000 pages of Fauci’s pandemic-era diaries. Republicans claim these raise questions about public messaging during the outbreak. Uthmeier’s decision to investigate further followed Fauci’s refusal to answer questions, which drew sharp criticism from GOP lawmakers.

There is also renewed discussion regarding former President Joe Biden’s preemptive pardon of Fauci. This pardon covers potential federal offenses linked to his government service until January 19, 2025. Experts note that presidential pardons apply only to federal crimes and do not protect against state-level investigations.

Collins, who aims to succeed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, framed the investigation as part of a broader push for accountability. He stated, “We stood up during COVID when many did not, and we were correct. Our state prospered with strong financial outcomes and business growth.”

He criticized several public health measures, including mask mandates and restaurant seating restrictions. As an amputee and decorated Army Special Forces combat veteran, Collins faced challenges accessing care through the Department of Veterans Affairs due to his vaccine opposition.

He also highlighted the long-term consequences of school closures, social restrictions on children, businesses, and mental health. The future of Uthmeier’s investigation is uncertain. Chairman Paul mentioned potential next steps, including contempt proceedings. Fauci has consistently defended his actions, insisting his recommendations were based on the science available at the time and denying accusations of deliberate misinformation.
