Sanders and Grassley Reintroduce Bill Fining Pentagon for Audit Failures

Sens. Bernie Sanders and Chuck Grassley have reintroduced a bipartisan bill that would impose financial penalties on the Pentagon if it fails to pass a full, independent audit. The legislation, known as the Audit the Pentagon Act, mandates a budget cut of 2 percent for any Pentagon component that does not pass a clean audit. The withheld funds would be redirected to the Treasury to help reduce the national deficit.

Sanders criticized the Pentagon’s history of financial mismanagement, highlighting its repeated audit failures while receiving substantial funding. The bill, first introduced in 2021 and now reintroduced in 2023, is co-sponsored by several senators, including Ron Wyden, Chris Van Hollen, and Elizabeth Warren.

The Pentagon failed its eighth consecutive audit last year. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has stated that the department aims to pass a clean audit by 2028. Bipartisan efforts continue to push the Pentagon toward financial transparency.

Recently, the House adopted Rep. Andy Biggs’s amendment to cut the Pentagon’s budget by 0.5 percent for any audit failures, showing further legislative pressure on the department to account for its financials.

In other defense news, the Army has contracted Lockheed Martin for up to $58.6 billion to produce Patriot interceptor missiles. This move aims to replenish dwindling U.S. munitions stockpiles through 2032.

“The Pentagon has been plagued by a massive amount of waste, fraud and financial mismanagement for decades,” Sanders said.
