A recent CNN poll has indicated a significant shift among Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults, with approximately one-third identifying as ‘democratic socialists’. This shift marks the growing impact of organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) on a national level.
The polling data, shared with Fox News Digital, revealed that 34% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning respondents consider themselves democratic socialists. Overall, 15% of all respondents across the political spectrum identify this way. Young White Americans make up the majority, with 59% under the age of 45 and 57% being White.
The poll was conducted by SSRS for CNN.
Concern continues to grow over the influence of socialism and the DSA in U.S. politics. Democratic socialists are reportedly more motivated to participate in elections, with 66% being ‘extremely motivated’ to vote, compared to 57% of other Democrats.
This follows several notable electoral successes for democratic socialists. New York City elected Zohran Mamdani, a DSA-backed candidate, as mayor. Seattle also chose a self-identified socialist Democrat, Katie Wilson, for the same role. On the federal front, DSA-backed candidates have won Democratic primaries in states like New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Abdul El-Sayed, supported by the DSA, is a favorite for the U.S. Senate Democratic nomination in Michigan.
The DSA’s increasing influence has drawn criticism due to its comprehensive platform calling for systemic governance changes. The National Republican Congressional Committee’s Mike Marinella voiced concerns about the DSA’s policies, which suggest significant transformations like eliminating Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), defunding the police, and revising the country’s governing structures.
Recent updates to the DSA policy platform propose eliminating the U.S. Senate, reorganizing the executive branch to answer directly to Congress, and granting mass amnesty to immigrants. It also advocates ending deportations and granting voting rights to noncitizens and those with criminal records.
Other proposals include a 32-hour workweek with no pay or benefit reductions, Medicare-for-all, canceling student debt, abolishing cash bail, and instituting universal rent control.
Natalie Baldassarre from the Republican National Committee commented that the Democratic Party’s alignment with these policies could negatively affect key elections.
