CTU President Backs Mayor Johnson’s Re-Election Amid Challenges

Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Stacy Davis Gates has expressed strong support for Mayor Brandon Johnson’s political future. In a recent interview, Gates stated her willingness to collect petition signatures for his re-election bid. She highlighted Johnson’s support for the city’s schools, especially in a time when the governor’s funding efforts have been lacking.

Gates praised the mayor for providing a billion dollars to Chicago Public Schools, stating this has been a significant improvement in academic leadership. She emphasized her hope that supporters would join efforts to keep Johnson in office.

The mayor’s close ties with the CTU have raised concerns about academic performance issues in Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Despite criticism over aligning with the union’s agenda, Johnson has insisted that his leadership reflects the values that resonate with Chicago residents.

Johnson’s political journey received a significant boost in 2023, when the CTU, among other teachers unions, financially supported his campaign. These organizations contributed over $6 million, facilitating his win over former contenders Lori Lightfoot and Paul Vallas.

During Johnson’s term, he oversaw a significant transition in CPS governance. A new hybrid school board was established, following legislation passed in 2021. This board now includes both elected and appointed members, and will fully transition to elected members by 2027.

The CTU’s political activities come at a time when CPS faces significant challenges, including an enrollment crisis and rising operational costs. During 2024 contract negotiations, a 142-page document outlined ambitious demands such as significant wage increases and climate initiatives, which the Illinois Policy Institute estimated could exceed $50 billion.

Many have criticized the union for focusing on political and social agendas over academics, with performance scores in CPS remaining a concern. However, CTU leaders assert the union’s democratic process aligns with the priorities of their members and Mayor Johnson.

Davis Gates dismissed the idea of the CTU endorsing another candidate, emphasizing the satisfaction among union members with Johnson’s support for their educational objectives. She stressed the importance of union involvement in decision-making processes.
