Deebo Samuel’s Return Boosts 49ers Amidst Challenges

The San Francisco 49ers face a significant setback as wide receiver Ricky Pearsall undergoes season-ending surgery for an injured right knee. General manager John Lynch confirmed that the surgery aims to repair Pearsall’s posterior cruciate ligament, following swelling in his knee during training camp.

Pearsall, a 2024 first-round pick, has exhibited potential in his first two NFL seasons but struggled with injuries. As a rookie, he dealt with a shoulder injury and a shooting incident before the season. He played 11 games in 2024, recording 31 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns. Although poised to excel as the team’s leading receiver in 2025, a knee injury interrupted his progress.

Despite an impressive start with 20 catches for 327 yards in four games, Pearsall missed six games due to the knee issue. Upon his return, his performance declined, securing only five catches for 20 yards over three games. Before re-aggravating the injury, he showed signs of resurgence with a six-catch, 96-yard game against the Tennessee Titans.

Pearsall missed additional games and was ineffective in the playoffs against the Seattle Seahawks. Over two seasons, Pearsall accumulated 67 catches for 928 yards and three touchdowns in 20 games. Given his limited playtime, the team is unlikely to extend his contract for 2028.

In response, the 49ers signed former All-Pro Deebo Samuel to a one-year deal worth up to $7 million. Samuel, who spent his first six seasons with the 49ers, returns to bolster the receiving corps alongside Mike Evans and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling. Samuel had been traded to Washington in 2025 but now rejoins the 49ers after achieving 72 catches for 727 yards and five touchdowns with the Commanders.

Throughout his career, Samuel has recorded 406 catches for 5,519 yards and 27 touchdowns. Known for his excellence after the catch, Samuel leads players with at least 100 receptions since 2019 with an average of 8.7 yards per catch. He has also rushed for 1,218 yards and 21 touchdowns in 97 games, adding versatility to the 49ers’ offense.
