The recent bombing at a Moscow restaurant has been described by the city’s mayor as a ‘brutal terrorist act,’ resulting in the death of three individuals and injuring at least 21 more. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin made this statement following the explosion, which occurred at the Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant.
In his social media post on Sunday, Sobyanin affirmed that victims are receiving necessary medical attention in local hospitals. He pledged that those responsible for the explosion will be found and punished appropriately.
Police cordoned off the area around the restaurant after the explosion on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
Although Russian authorities have not yet identified any suspects or received claims of responsibility for the attack, investigations are ongoing. Reports suggest the blast was caused by a homemade explosive device. According to RIA Novosti, a woman carrying the bomb was prevented from entering the restaurant by a security guard, which resulted in the explosion.
Tragically, the blast claimed the lives of the woman, the security guard, and a restaurant patron. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. local time at the restaurant situated on Kudrinskaya Square.
During the attack, the restaurant was hosting a private event, not open to the public. Footage from Russian state media showed heavily armed police, ambulances, and emergency vehicles at the scene, with investigators examining the premises.
Earlier in the year, Russia’s Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, announced plans to increase security measures for high-ranking military and government officials. This decision followed multiple assassination attempts within Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine launched by the Kremlin in February 2022.
No direct connections between the restaurant bombing and prior attacks or the ongoing conflict in Ukraine have been made by Russian authorities. The investigation continues to gather details and determine the perpetrators behind this tragic event.
