Migrants Face Uncertainty After Crossing to Ceuta

In a tragic turn of events, a teenage girl from Tangier made it to Spanish soil, but her younger brother drowned during the crossing, and her mother was lost amidst the chaos as thousands attempted to leave Morocco through the breakwater.

This young girl is among over 800 minors who face an uncertain future after a massive influx into Ceuta. She recounted to an AP photojournalist how her family joined others attempting to swim around a border fence to reach Spain, driven by the hope for better opportunities. Her identity is kept confidential due to her vulnerable status.

She vividly described witnessing Spanish police retrieve her 8-year-old brother’s body from the sea. Although she reached the shore, she lost contact with her mother and spent four days alone, relying on the help of locals who provided her with food and shelter. Despite seeking help from a youth center, she found it full.

I saw people stepping on the dead,

she shared through a translator, indicating her current plight of begging on the streets.

Authorities report that around 860 minors remained in Ceuta after the crossing. Observations by AP journalists noted minors were asking for food. The crossing led to 72 confirmed deaths, mostly at sea, while Morocco recorded 11 more, uncounted in Spain’s tally.

Spanish law obligates authorities to care for unaccompanied minors. For adults, asylum applications can lead to deportation if denied. Humanitarian protection is rarely granted for Moroccans. An event exemplified this when a high-ranking officer halted the deportation of an unaccompanied 12-year-old Moroccan boy after residents and media intervened.

While many Moroccan adults chose to or were forced to return, notable numbers from war-stricken zones, like Sudan, Gaza, and Afghanistan, remain. Ceuta’s migrant center, designed for 600, is at full capacity. The scarcity of resources has influenced a strategy where hunger and exhaustion might prompt voluntary returns to Morocco.
