Lombard made a memorable debut by hitting a home run in the fifth inning, his second time at bat. He hit an 0-2 pitch from Cardinals’ starter Hunter Dobbins into the left-field stands. His 392-foot homer provided the Yankees with a 2-0 lead. This marked the first time a Yankees player homered in his debut since Jasson Domínguez achieved the feat against Justin Verlander on September 1, 2023.

At 21 years and 63 days old, Lombard stands as the sixth-youngest Yankee to debut since 1985, and the second-youngest shortstop, following Derek Jeter, who debuted at 20 years and 337 days in 1995. Lombard’s defensive play also shone, aiding in two inning-ending double plays. In the third inning, Lombard’s off-balance throw to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. led to an out, and in the fifth, he initiated a double play by fielding a grounder, touching the second base and throwing to first baseman Ben Rice.

Chisholm also contributed offensively, hitting a home run in the second inning, helping the Yankees secure their 10th win in 16 games. Ryan Weathers pitched strongly, allowing four hits over six scoreless innings, with six strikeouts and no walks. Heliot Ramos made a crucial catch to prevent a run in the sixth, and David Bednar finished the game, earning his 25th save in 27 opportunities.

Hunter Dobbins, the Cardinals’ pitcher, allowed two runs and four hits over his 6 1/3 innings. The Cardinals experienced their sixth scoreless game of the season and had to scratch All-Star outfielder Jordan Walker due to knee inflammation.
