Research from Texas A&M University suggests that polyethylene, a common plastic used in food packaging, may contribute to fatty liver disease. The study found that polyethylene on its own increased signs of the disease and worsened its progression when combined with diets high in fat, fructose, and cholesterol.
Understanding Polyethylene
Polyethylene is one of the most widely used plastics globally and was previously considered biologically inert. Microplastics, which are small particles from larger plastic products, have been detected in various environments, including within the human body.
The Study’s Findings
Dr. Adi Joshi, leading the research team, aimed to assess polyethylene’s impact on liver health. The findings indicated that exposure to polyethylene increased disease markers and had heightened effects with Western-style diets.
The research utilized spatial transcriptomics to examine gene activity and identify specific liver damage areas. The focus was on the PPAR-alpha protein that regulates fat production and the ANXA2 gene involved in tissue repair.
While the study linked microplastic exposure to worsening liver disease in mice, the direct effect on humans remains unestablished. Dr. Nhan Nguyen emphasized the need for caution, noting the presence of microplastics in common household items and the necessity for realistic exposure analysis.
Future Directions
The researchers plan to explore polyethylene’s role in advanced liver disease stages and investigate other molecular pathways. Understanding the PPAR-alpha pathway’s manipulation might help reduce polyethylene’s harmful effects.
Nguyen highlighted the importance of increased awareness regarding microplastics and environmental chemicals.
Joshi’s work represents pioneering research in identifying microplastic-induced liver damage.
