Rep. Chuck Edwards Exits McDonald’s Ownership and Withdraws Re-Election Bid

Rep. Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., and his wife Teresa have sold their McDonald’s restaurant business, which they spent decades building. This decision allows Edwards to focus more on his responsibilities representing western North Carolina in Congress.

Edwards announced on Wednesday morning that he would not seek re-election. In a post at 3:32 a.m. ET, he stated, “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, prayers, and support. God bless WNC and America.”

This announcement comes shortly after the House Ethics Committee’s report recommended a censure for Edwards. The committee found that he “engaged in persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers.” Although Edwards denied any sexual intent, the behaviors were deemed inappropriate.

The report noted that Edwards showed “effusive affection” toward the staffers, including giving lavish gifts and making comments about their appearance. He also invited them to dinners, vacations, and other activities. The committee added that Edwards was, at best, unaware of the impact of his behavior on the young women.

Edwards has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since early 2023. He won the GOP primary for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District earlier this year. However, the ethics report has overshadowed his tenure, prompting his decision not to run again.

The committee found no evidence of sexual activity or propositions but pointed out that his actions created uncomfortable situations for the staff. They attempted to communicate their discomfort, but Edwards’ status as their employer made it challenging.

The report concluded with a recommendation for censure, emphasizing the need for accountability in light of the allegations. The ethics probe has highlighted the significance of maintaining professional conduct in congressional offices.
