Blakeman Proposes Silent Protest Against NYC Mayor at 9/11 Memorial

Bruce Blakeman, the Republican candidate for New York governor, suggested a silent protest at this year’s September 11 memorial. He recommended attendees turn their backs on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani if the mayor attends. Blakeman, whose nephew perished in the South Tower attacks, currently serves as Nassau County executive.

“Consider it like attending a wake where you’re not welcome,” Blakeman remarked, recounting his views to reporters. He believes that, while the mayor’s attendance could be respectfully contested, he should not have to attend if not welcomed. “Turning away is a peaceful gesture families might consider if the mayor shows up,” he stated.

“He’s not welcome there because he has yet to say anything in opposition to the global intifada… it seems like he supports that phrase,” Blakeman remarked regarding Mamdani.

Mamdani has not responded to these remarks. He confirmed his intention to attend the ceremony, voicing his commitment to honoring those impacted by the attacks.

“I want to stand with families, survivors, and first responders forever affected by that tragic day,” Mamdani declared last week.

This follows efforts by 9/11 victims’ families to initiate a petition on Change.org aimed at preventing Mamdani’s attendance. They cited his public positions as potentially misaligned with the values of the memorial. “It’s crucial to consider if his participation matches the event’s intentions and the families’ expectations,” the petition mentioned.

A 9/11 Memorial & Museum spokesperson told Fox News Digital their intent to keep the annual commemoration non-political. “Politicians from various affiliations, including presidents, have attended simply to witness. They don’t give speeches and are confined to a specific area,” they stated.

Former New York Governor George Pataki expressed reservations about Mamdani’s participation, acknowledging that Sept. 11 holds a unique place in people’s hearts. “Though I favor inclusivity, Sept. 11 remains distinct,” Pataki noted.
