Harrison Butker’s Strategy Shift: Improving Field Goal Accuracy

The Kansas City Chiefs rewarded kicker Harrison Butker with a four-year contract extension worth $25.6 million during the 2024 training camp. This was a result of his outstanding performance during the 2023 season, where he achieved a career-high 94.3 percent field goal success rate. His postseason accuracy, where he made every field goal and all eight extra points, played a key role in the Chiefs’ victory, clinching their third Super Bowl title.

Challenges with Kickoff Rule Changes

In 2024, the NFL introduced changes to kickoff rules, prompting kickers like Butker to modify their kickoff techniques during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. These changes impacted his field goal success rate, which dropped to 84 percent in 2024 and 84.2 percent in 2025. This was notable as these were his lowest percentages aside from the 2023 season when he faced an ankle injury.

Adjustments in Technique

Butker explained to reporters that experimenting with different kickoff techniques negatively affected his field goal performance. In response, he decided to make his kickoffs more consistent with his field goal technique, focusing on achieving good foot-to-ball contact. “Field goals matter the most,” Butker stated, emphasizing that refining his technique helped improve his performance in the latter half of the season.

Trying to hit those knuckleballs and the funny kickoffs maybe affected the field goals a little bit. I think halfway through the season last year I said, forget the kickoffs… I’m just gonna hit a high hang time ball, good location, just focus on the location.

By maintaining consistent foot-to-ball contact across both field goals and kickoffs, Butker noticed a positive impact. This adjustment has become a focus during training camp and going into the new season.

Looking Ahead

Currently ranked as the fourth-highest paid kicker in the NFL, Butker holds the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history with a 57-yard kick. Having made 88.3 percent of his field goals over his nine-year career, Butker aims to return to top form with his newfound confidence and refined technique.
