Aaron Glenn’s Clock Management Questioned After Jets’ Overtime Loss

Sometimes, the most questionable decision in NFL games isn’t a play itself, but a decision by a coach. Aaron Glenn, the head coach of the New York Jets, faced tough inquiries following a 20-17 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers. His choices in the game’s final moments left many puzzled.

In Glenn’s second season with the Jets, his clock management has often been inconsistent. During Sunday’s game, his decisions stirred controversy. When the Packers held a 5-yard completion on third-and-10 in the fourth quarter, they faced a fourth-down play with about 50 seconds remaining.

Glenn could have called a timeout immediately. This would have forced the Packers to punt from midfield, potentially giving the Jets’ offense one last chance to score in regulation. Yet Glenn chose not to use his timeouts.

“I didn’t consider using that. I know exactly what you’re talking about. No, I didn’t think of using the timeout at that point at all,” Glenn admitted after the game.

Despite the choice to keep his timeouts, the Packers opted for a delay of game penalty, reducing the clock to just two seconds. A subsequent sack on Jordan Love ended regulation.

If Glenn had used a timeout after the third-down completion, the Jets might have forced Green Bay to punt, thus providing their offense a chance. Glenn argued that a punt might have placed the Jets in a bad field position.

“They could have punted the ball and put us in a backed-up situation right there. So that was the reason why,” Glenn explained.

The decision denied the Jets any final opportunity to win in regulation. Critics, including fans and media, did not absolve Glenn of responsibility. The New York Post emphasized the error, and fans voiced frustration on social media.
