Retired Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara found himself in an unexpected situation on a United Airlines flight. The routine flight from Newark to Fort Lauderdale took a turn when a passenger became disruptive.
O’Hara, accompanied by his wife, watched as flight attendants spent nearly 45 minutes attempting to calm the situation. The passenger’s behavior escalated, leading O’Hara and two off-duty Bergen County, New Jersey sheriff’s deputies to intervene.
The passenger refused to remain in his seat and verbally abused flight attendants. His agitation grew when denied further alcohol service, as confirmed later by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Despite the flight crew’s efforts to de-escalate matters, the confrontation became physical.
“They were absolute professionals trying to keep everybody safe,” O’Hara commented, noting the professionalism of the flight staff.
As the situation intensified, two passengers assisted in restraining the man with the help of plastic flex cuffs. These passengers were later identified as Bergen County Sheriff’s deputies. Together with O’Hara, they ensured the safety of the flight.
United Airlines acknowledged the incident in a statement noting that local law enforcement met the flight upon arrival in Fort Lauderdale to handle the situation. The incident emphasized how quickly disruptions can become dangerous in flight.
O’Hara reflected on the event’s potential dangers, considering the confined space aboard the aircraft. His wife, a Newark Police Department lieutenant, was nearby, ready to assist if needed.
After the flight, O’Hara’s wife expressed pride in her husband’s actions on social media. She acknowledged his willingness to step up in a dangerous situation.
O’Hara underlined the importance of action when innocent individuals are threatened. He referenced the upcoming 25th anniversary of September 11, emphasizing the duty to intervene in escalating situations.
He also urged airlines to ensure restraints are available and that personnel are trained to use them if necessary. By Thursday afternoon, officials had not released the identity of the passenger or any potential charges.
