Puerto Rico is facing a significant drought that has necessitated water rationing measures in San Juan, affecting both residents and tourists. Starting Friday, more than 180,000 water customers will experience 48-hour water outages on an alternating schedule, according to reports from The Associated Press.

Historical weather data indicates that July was the driest month in over 120 years for San Juan and was also the second-hottest month on record. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, nearly 25% of Puerto Rico is undergoing severe drought conditions, while another 36% falls under moderate drought.

Puerto Rico’s water rationing measures are not isolated, as other tropical locations have faced similar challenges. Earlier this year, Hawaii issued brown water advisories due to heavy storm runoff, causing fears of contamination with pesticides and waste.
