Trump Administration’s Efforts to Dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook Persist

1 hour ago 0

The Trump administration is persisting in its efforts to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, despite a Supreme Court ruling allowing her to stay in her role during her legal challenge against the dismissal over denied mortgage fraud allegations. This move comes two months after the court’s narrow 5-4 decision allowed Cook, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, to remain on the Federal Reserve Board as long as her lawsuit continues.

The administration is appealing a lower court’s decision supporting Cook. In a recent letter from the White House, Dan Scavino informed Cook of the administration’s plans to remove her, echoing the Supreme Court’s requirement for proper notice and granting her until August 26 to contest the decision.

The allegations against Cook stem from a referral by Bill Pulte, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, accusing Cook of mortgage fraud by labeling two homes, one in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and one in Atlanta, as her primary residences. This designation can lead to better mortgage rates or lower down payments compared to secondary homes.

Cook has steadfastly refuted these claims, asserting that her removal is politically motivated due to her independent stance on setting interest rates. Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, pointed out that Cook has primarily resided in the Ann Arbor home since 2005, justifying her claim on the mortgage refinance application in June 2021. A month later, she referred to the Atlanta condo as a primary residence, but Lowell described this as an ‘isolated notation’ with no intention to deceive.

The latest White House communication reiterates previous allegations. Lowell stated that the claims are as unfounded now as they were a year ago when Trump first tried to remove Cook, asserting there is no legal basis for such action under current facts and Supreme Court precedent. He affirmed their readiness to challenge this new attempt and to uphold Cook’s position and the Federal Reserve’s independence.
