The criticisms came after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Paul, voted to refer Fauci for contempt due to his repeated Fifth Amendment invocations during a hearing on his pandemic response. Fauci invoked this right 111 times while questioned about his role as the White House chief medical adviser.

Sen. Paul released over a thousand pages of Fauci’s private reflections, which Fauci had stored on government computers. Maher argued that by publishing these documents, Paul contradicted his long-standing platform against government overreach.
