Todd Blanche’s narrow confirmation as attorney general has stirred widespread criticism from Democratic lawmakers and various watchdog groups. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Republicans of providing President Donald Trump with an opportunity to continue his alleged corrupt practices. Blanche, a former personal attorney to Trump, was confirmed by a slim 50-49 vote in the Senate early Saturday. Key Republican figures, including Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, played a crucial role in this outcome. Cassidy’s support was vital after Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski expressed their opposition.

Controversial Tenure and Confirmation

Blanche had been serving as acting attorney general since April following Pam Bondi’s removal. His tenure faced scrutiny due to his management of issues like the Jeffrey Epstein files and a proposed $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. His confirmation followed months of controversy, with critics questioning his ability to operate independently from the White House given his previous ties to Trump.

In response to his confirmation, Schumer argued that the Justice Department’s independence was compromised. He noted that appointing Trump’s former defense lawyer as attorney general posed risks to eliminating corruption. Blanche’s career, according to Schumer, has been characterized by enabling corruption.

The White House, through press secretary Karoline Leavitt, welcomed Blanche’s confirmation as a significant victory for Trump and the country. She emphasized Blanche’s commitment to law and order, asserting his competency as attorney general.

Schumer was not alone in his criticism. Senator Chris Coons and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also voiced their opposition. Coons accused Blanche of prioritizing loyalty to Trump over public duty. Pelosi criticized the timing of the vote, suggesting it occurred “under the cover of darkness,” denying the American public a trustworthy Justice Department.

Senator Ben Ray Luján highlighted concerns over the handling of Jeffrey Epstein-related matters. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability for Epstein’s victims, which he argued would be undermined under Blanche’s leadership.

Watchdog Group Opposition

Outside Congress, watchdog organizations raised alarms as well. Donald K. Sherman of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) accused Senate Republicans of failing to check executive power. He condemned their support for Blanche as aiding Trump’s authoritarian tendencies.

The confirmation hinged on support from Bill Cassidy. Initially skeptical over Blanche’s involvement in controversial matters, Cassidy decided to support him after discussions and consultations with former Attorney General William Barr. Cassidy believed Blanche’s past experience with Trump could enable him to provide necessary opposition to Trump when needed.
