Pregnant Haitian Woman Faces Uncertainty as TPS Ends

By August 8, 2026, a 29-year-old pregnant woman in Florida faces the fear of deportation. She is among the over 300,000 Haitian nationals impacted as the Trump administration terminated the Temporary Protective Status (TPS) program for Haitians. The program, which lasted for decades, ended after a legal battle, citing improvements in Haiti.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to increase operations to arrest and deport Haitian migrants. This information comes from two ICE sources and federal documents. The woman, whose name is withheld by CBS News, arrived in the U.S. at the age of six and has no remaining family in Haiti.

TPS was meant to protect Haitians escaping violence. However, despite the State Department’s Level 4 travel advisory against visiting Haiti, the program has been discontinued. A United Nations report highlighted 613 gang-related killings in Haiti between March and July. Many neighborhoods suffer from suspended basic services due to ongoing violence.

Florida hosts some of the largest Haitian communities in the U.S. A man in Miami’s Little Haiti sits by a mural at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, exemplifying the area’s deep Haitian ties.

The woman expressed her concern about returning to Haiti, stating, “I wouldn’t have anywhere to go.” She argues that the “temporary” nature of TPS is a step in pursuing legal status, pointing out that she’s lost her job due to her TPS expiration. Her health insurance is also about to end. Her pregnancy is high-risk, demanding weekly medical appointments, which she cannot afford without insurance.

Her partner, a U.S. citizen, ensures that their child will be American-born, but the woman’s sense of American identity is strong due to her long stay in the country. She describes the U.S. as the home she knows. Currently, she, like many others, remains hidden. Miami’s Little Haiti appears deserted, with once lively streets now largely empty. She only ventures out for essential doctor visits, which she might soon cease altogether.
