In a recent episode, Fairchild recounted a frightening incident before she became famous when she was abducted on a New York City street. Despite the grave situation, Fairchild used humor to secure her freedom.

At 20 years old, the Dallas native was visiting her sister in 1970 when the event occurred. She was walking in the afternoon when a man approached her. Although knowing not to engage, she ignored him. Another man joined, and both forcefully placed her into a cab.

The abduction attempt happened in front of several bystanders, but no one intervened. Fairchild screamed for help but was ignored. In the cab, she realized her captors were a pimp and a pusher, each detailing what would happen to her.

“I was a shy kid, but I was damned if I was going to let them see how scared I was,” Fairchild said.

Fairchild responded to the threats with jokes. Her wit entertained the kidnappers, leading them to eventually release her.

She returned safely to her sister’s apartment but stayed indoors for days. Fairchild reflects on how she managed to improvise her way out, attributing it to instinct.

Fairchild shared this story on her podcast to highlight the importance of awareness for women. She urges women to remain cautious and not be distracted by devices like cell phones, which can make them vulnerable.

“People tend to become unaware when they’re engaged with their phones,” Fairchild explained. “Always be attentive to your surroundings and never assume you’re safe.”

Fairchild now remains vigilant, constantly scanning her environment to ensure her safety. She advises checking surroundings discreetly to avoid drawing attention.
