World-renowned Irish author Sally Rooney will no longer have her books supplied to U.K. retailers. Her support for Palestine Action, a group banned in Britain for terrorism, led to this decision. Her works, including “Normal People” and “Conversations with Friends,” are acclaimed and adapted into TV shows.
Publisher Faber released a statement highlighting the inability to pass U.K. earnings to Rooney. Selling work without providing earnings to the author is unacceptable for the publisher. Rooney’s intent to financially support Palestine Action might expose her and Faber to prosecution under U.K.’s anti-terrorism laws.
“I want to be clear that I intend to use these proceeds of my work, as well as my public platform generally, to go on supporting Palestine Action and direct action against genocide in whatever way I can,” Rooney wrote in The Irish Times in August 2025.
Understanding Palestine Action
Founded in 2020, Palestine Action is a British group focused on protests and sabotage against arms manufacturers. It argues these companies supply weapons to Israel. The group labels itself as a movement to end global support for Israel’s apartheid regime.
The British government tagged Palestine Action as a terrorist organization in July 2025. This decision followed incidents of criminal damage and attacks on defense facilities. One notable incident involved the sabotage of a factory owned by Teledyne Technologies in 2022. The group also damaged aircraft at RAF Brize Norton, costing around $9.4 million according to police figures.
Under U.K. law, supporting or being a member of a designated terrorist group is a crime. Public protests in support of the group led to many arrests. Data from Britain’s Home Office indicates the average age of those detained for supporting Palestine Action is 59, contrasting with 28 for other terrorism-related arrests. Legal debates over the ban continue in the Supreme Court.
A spokesperson from Campaign Against Antisemitism commented on Rooney’s decision. The group reported her to counterterrorism police over her financial support vow.
