The upcoming trial for Carson Peters-Berger, an 18-year-old accused of the murder and sexual assault of his 10-year-old cousin, Lily Peters, might not take place as planned. The Chippewa County District Attorney’s Office has announced a resolution hearing set for August 26, which could potentially end the case without a trial.
In April 2022, Lily Peters was found dead after disappearing in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Her father reported her missing when she did not return from her aunt’s house. A search led to the discovery of her bicycle in a wooded area, and her body was found the following morning.
The criminal complaint indicates that Peters-Berger, who was 14 at the time, allegedly attacked Lily after suggesting they explore off-trail. He reportedly punched and hit her with a stick, later strangling and attempting to sexually assault her. Afterward, he allegedly went home to clean up and later returned to conceal her body further.
Peters-Berger faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault, and first-degree sexual assault of a child under age 13, all of which carry severe penalties if he is found guilty.
Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell stated the resolution hearing might provide closure without going to trial. However, Peters-Berger’s defense attorney, Michael Cohen, mentioned that the hearing would address case-related issues to decide on the necessity of a trial.
Authorities remain involved in handling the outcome of these proceedings and monitoring any developments related to Peters-Berger’s legal responsibilities.
