Chicago White Sox Victory Over Guardians

The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians faced challenges after a 2-hour and 23-minute rain delay at Rate Field on Sunday. The Sox turned to Hagen Smith, their 2024 first-round draft pick, for relief when play resumed.

Smith shared his experience of being notified about pitching an hour into the delay. He struck out three, walked four, and didn’t allow a run over two innings, marking a victorious debut in front of 31,263 fans.

Colson Montgomery’s three-run homer secured a lead during an explosive third inning as the Sox won the series 5-3. With the win, the Sox, leading the American League Central, now have a record of 61-56. The Detroit Tigers trail by 3.5 games while the Guardians and Minnesota Twins are four games behind.

“It signals progress for us,”

said Sox manager Will Venable, reflecting on the team’s achievements compared to last season’s 60-102 record.

Smith celebrated his first major league win after learning he’d earned it upon returning to the clubhouse.

The game became bullpen-heavy for both teams. Smith and Tanner McDougal were called up from Triple-A Charlotte while other pitchers were reassigned. Smith received applause as he prepared to enter Sunday’s game.

Smith came in when the Sox were down 2-1, following run-scoring efforts by Munetaka Murakami and Miguel Vargas in the first inning. After rain disrupted play, both teams had to adjust their tactics. Sox’s Brenton Doyle and Munetaka Murakami had contributed earlier against Guardians’ starter Joey Cantillo.

Rain had been unanticipated, according to manager Venable. Both team’s starters exited following the delay, leading to Smith’s opportunity. Smith struck out Guardians’ Brayan Rocchio, showcasing impressive control amidst adversity.

In the third inning, Smith handled loaded bases for the Guardians. He induced Rocchio to line out, maintaining the lead.

Venable commented on the unexpected situation for Smith, mentioning that the young pitcher managed well under pressure.

The Sox capitalized on opportunities in the bottom of the third. Vargas walked, reached second, and scored a tying run off Randal Grichuk’s double. Colson Montgomery then hit his 26th homer, strengthening the Sox’s lead.

Venable said, noting Montgomery’s critical contribution.

Sox relievers Sean Newcomb, Huascar Brazobán, Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks, and Trevor Richards held on to secure the win, completing a challenging 13-game stretch against rival teams.
