Pentagon Adjusts Casualty Recording for U.S.-Iran Conflict

The Pentagon introduced a new casualty category for recent U.S.-Iran conflict casualties as ‘Operation Epic Fury’ ended. This operation encompassed military actions against Tehran. The Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) has moved four soldiers killed and numerous injured troops from the Iran war tally to a newly established “Overseas Operations” category.

The total wounded now stands at 642, combining those from Operation Epic Fury and the new category. A Pentagon official confirmed the classification shift due to the operation’s conclusion. The official, speaking anonymously, did not specify when the operation formally ended.

Continuous military exchanges with Iran, involving U.S. strikes in the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian attacks on U.S.-hosting Middle Eastern countries, led to this update. Hostilities paused temporarily with mediation efforts, but resumed as tensions flared in the crucial shipping area. U.S. Central Command reported intercepting Iranian-fired ballistic missiles targeting American troops.

Earlier, a ceasefire was agreed upon in April, followed by a deal to halt the conflict by mid-June. However, the ceasefire broke when Iran attacked vessels, prompting renewed strikes. President Donald Trump recently participated in honoring 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, a soldier killed in the conflict.

Despite removing four soldiers from the Iran war count, Pentagon officials attribute it to “anomalies” and “temporary data disruptions,” dismissing attempts to obscure conflict costs. These troops were relocated to the “Overseas Operations” category by name. The casualties include three soldiers killed in a Jordan base attack and one in Iraq during a controlled detonation.

In May, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the operation’s objectives had been met. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth provided Congress with conflict cost estimates while not claiming the war’s conclusion.
