Skepticism in Journalism and California’s Stories

As a journalist with nearly 30 years of experience, I’ve dedicated my career to scrutinizing those in power. Whether it’s traditional Democrats, Republicans, or entrepreneurs, I maintain a critical distance to better understand the policies shaping our lives. This approach will guide my work with Essential California, where I’ll bring stories of delight and significance.

Though my path to journalism was unexpected, it was ignited by an encounter in Czechoslovakia in the early 1990s. After graduating into a recession with a degree in poetry, I took a job teaching English there. The school was founded by an ambitious entrepreneur from Seattle. Despite the lack of resources, I admired the students’ zeal to escape their past. A memorable moment occurred when the entrepreneur praised my accent rather than addressing the school’s issues, sparking my love for questioning authority.

Over the years, my work at various newspapers has revealed corruption and malpractice, from prison gangs led by guards to hospital concealments. We exposed officials issuing licenses to convicted felons. Stories often began with accusations of “fake news” but ended in accountability, with officials removed or laws changed.

Essential California will cover impactful stories and quirky ones that intrigue us, while also focusing on exposing the self-serving. Among top stories, we’ve covered efforts to complete the L.A.
