The honey business in The Rivals of Amziah King reveals a harsh reality. Characters in the film engage in theft, poisoning, and deceit. The protagonist warns, “It’s not full of kind people.”
The movie itself combines multiple genres, reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino’s style. It blends elements of a coming-of-age story, heist film, revenge fantasy, and musical setting. Matthew McConaughey brings his signature charm to the lead role, infusing the character with a playful and gentlemanly aura.
Directed by Andrew Patterson and co-written with James Montague, the film follows Amziah King as he navigates rural Oklahoma’s honey production scene. McConaughey exits the film midway, handing the narrative to newcomer Angelina LookingGlass.
The plot kicks off with King enjoying chicken fried steak sandwiches at a local eatery. His peaceful life gets interrupted when abandoned honey barrels pique his curiosity. An industrial accident later claims the focus, escalating tensions.
LookingGlass plays King’s former foster daughter. Her role is marked by grounded expressions and insights into local traditions. Bees symbolize community, highlighting themes of sharing and unity.
Cinematographer M.I. Littin-Menz uses energetic styles, mixing static shots, rapid cuts, and close-ups. The approach may distract from the story. Music supervisor Winslow Bright floods scenes with prominent soundtracks, mixing choir pieces and Americana tunes by T Bone Burnett.
The film explores various tones, transitioning abruptly between comedic music performances and unsettling violence. Supporting actors Kurt Russell and Owen Teague deliver noteworthy performances. Russell plays a formidable local figure, while Teague displays military precision in planning a theft.
Filming largely occurred in Alabama, despite director Patterson’s Oklahoma roots. This contributes to a lack of authenticity in both setting and narrative.
