Jacy Maranhao, a Brazilian soccer player, provided a health update following a frightening incident at a recent match. Maranhao, who plays for Coritiba in Brazil, fell through a hole at the stadium during a goal celebration.
Maranhao scored for his team at Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira. In the excitement, he attempted to celebrate with his wife in the stands and jumped over a barrier on the pitch. Unbeknownst to him, a trap door lay open on the other side. He fell and injured his ankle.
Personal Motivations
The 29-year-old defender explained that his celebration was intended for his pregnant wife. In his excitement, he forgot about a moat at the stadium, which led to his fall. The Brazilian outlet Globo quoted him saying, “I scored the goal and wanted to celebrate with my wife because she’s pregnant.”
“But then I remembered it was my first goal at Couto Pereira stadium, and I also wanted to celebrate with the fans, but I hadn’t remembered there was a moat there.”
Unfortunately, a VAR review later canceled Maranhao’s goal for being offsides. Despite this, his team, Coritiba, won the match 2-1.
Health Recovery
After his fall, Maranhao managed to continue playing for the remainder of the half. However, he eventually had to leave the game. He described his injury, saying, “I twisted my foot there. It’s a bit sore, but I’m fine. Center-backs hardly ever score goals.”
Following the game, Maranhao shared updates on social media, saying he was recovering well and initially more scared than injured. “During the match my foot was quite painful and I couldn’t really put weight on it, but today I’m feeling much better,” he noted.
Maranhao has played 19 matches this season for Coritiba, after joining the team following a stint with Operário. Coritiba re-entered Brazil’s Série A this season after earning promotion from Série B.
