David Crowley Secures Democratic Nomination for Wisconsin Governor

David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, has secured the Democratic nomination for governor of Wisconsin. The Associated Press announced his victory over state Representative Francesca Hong, who is known for her democratic socialist views. Hong’s campaign had challenged the party establishment, making the race highly competitive.

Crowley faced significant challenges earlier in his campaign, including low poll ratings and limited campaign funds. Despite these setbacks, he relaunched his campaign with the support of outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers. This backing played a crucial role in countering Hong’s increasing momentum.

Hong’s defeat arrives in the wake of several progressive victories in recent primaries across the nation. Nevertheless, the close competition indicates Democratic voters’ desire for change. If Crowley wins in the fall, he will become Wisconsin’s first Black governor.

In the upcoming election, Crowley will compete against U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany. Tiffany, endorsed by former President Trump, won his party’s primary by a significant margin. Known for his conservative voting record, Tiffany questioned the 2020 election results but has since sought to present himself as a relatable figure for Wisconsin voters.

The Republicans view the fall election as an opportunity to reclaim the governor’s office. Meanwhile, Democrats aim to maintain it and gain control of at least one chamber in the legislature, which is currently dominated by the GOP.

Crowley’s supporters emphasized his greater electability compared to Hong. Her previous statements advocating for defunding the police, abolishing prisons, and canceling Thanksgiving provided potential attack lines for Republicans in the lead-up to November. After relaunching his campaign, Crowley significantly increased his fundraising, raising nearly three times more money than before his brief campaign suspension.

Crowley criticized allegations of being an establishment candidate against a progressive newcomer. He is originally from inner-city Milwaukee and has personal experience with eviction and drug addiction within his family. His political career began with his involvement in Democratic U.S. Senator Russ Feingold’s 2010 re-election campaign, followed by a position in the state Assembly. In 2020, he made history as the youngest and first Black Milwaukee County Executive.
