Last month, President Trump was discreetly transferred from Air Force One to another plane due to a detected Iranian missile threat, CBS News reports. The decision occurred during the NATO conference in Ankara, with US and Turkish intelligence intercepting the plot.
Authorities decided on the switch when President Trump arrived on a recently upgraded Boeing 747, provided by Qatar. An older Air Force One served as a backup. Intelligence agencies, including the NSA and CIA, along with Turkey’s MIT, found credible information about Iran’s intent to target the presidential jet. No missile team was discovered, following additional investigations.
Officials indicate Iran poses danger to President Trump as the US-Iran conflict nears six months. Trump acknowledged this, stating he is Iran’s main target during a news conference in Ankara.
The National Security Council, White House Military Office, and Secret Service coordinated the plane change with Washington. Trump mentioned on Truth Social his preference for the older Air Force One, citing nostalgia.
Footage captured Trump boarding the older aircraft. A catering truck later transported him to a US Air Force C-32A jet. Trump, accompanied by aides and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, flew to a UK military base.
The decoy plane, posing as Air Force One, carried Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and other officials. Only Rubio and Bessent knew Trump was not on board, according to sources.
In the UK, Trump switched to the Qatari-donated Air Force One to continue to Washington, D.C. The decoy plan remained confidential until recent reports emerged. Law enforcement officials clarified the maneuver aimed at misdirection without increasing others’ risk.
Trump discussed the change on Tuesday, explaining military and Secret Service’s safety concerns. He claimed the alternative flight posed more risk and expressed his usual awareness of threats as a significant leader. “I have a lot of threats,” Trump noted. “Any consequential president has a lot of threats.”
