Family Seeks Answers in Tragic Death of Teen Nolan Wells

The family of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black teenager who tragically died after disappearing during a boat trip near the Mississippi coast on July 4, collaborates with local prosecutors to investigate his cellphone’s contents.

Wells traveled to Horn Island with friends. He did not return and his mother, Christine Wonsley, reported him missing after midnight on July 5. Rescuers found his body in the surrounding waters the following day.

Wells’ family retrieved his cellphone from a friend’s house on July 4, using a locator app. They stated that some messages appeared to have been deleted before they received the phone. This is one of several concerns they have voiced about the circumstances and investigation into his death.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has stated no foul play is suspected but requested more information from the public. The official autopsy results remain pending. The family has engaged lawyer Ben Crump, known for high-profile civil rights cases, advocating for transparency in the investigation.

Photos and videos from the July 4 celebration on Horn Island, attended by around 200 people, show Wells as one of the few Black individuals present. This detail has been highlighted by the family and attorneys.

A meeting took place with District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath to discuss the investigation. McIlrath committed to presenting the findings to a grand jury upon completion.

Christine Wonsley announced on Facebook that her son’s funeral is set for July 20, urging attendees to remain peaceful.
