Democrat James Talarico Gains Momentum in Texas Senate Race

The Texas Senate race has seen Democrat James Talarico gaining significant traction, surpassing Republican Ken Paxton backed by Trump, in prediction markets for the first time. This change is visible on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket. Talarico currently holds a 56% chance of winning on Kalshi compared to Paxton’s 44%. This marks Talarico’s first lead on Kalshi, occurring as polling dynamics in the traditionally Republican-dominated state shift.

On Polymarket, Talarico is slightly ahead at 52% versus Paxton’s 48%, with the change happening around Tuesday afternoon. Robert Y. Shapiro from Columbia University emphasizes that this shift could represent a significant political change in Texas, influencing Democrat efforts to control the Senate. With Republicans holding a 53-45 Senate majority, flipping Texas is crucial for Democrats to challenge Trump’s judicial appointments.

The Fox poll involved 1,006 registered Texan voters with a 3% margin of error.

The Texas Pulse survey by ReconMR for Texas A&M revealed Talarico leading Paxton 47% to 43% among likely voters, showing change from June levels where candidates were tied. This survey’s margin of error is 4.7%, indicating a tight race.

Decision Desk HQ labels the race a toss-up, hinting at Talarico’s slight advantage, while the Cook Political Report categorizes it as Lean Republican.

Challenges for Ken Paxton

Paxton faces considerable challenges, including uniting moderates and independents after a difficult primary against Senator John Cornyn. The Texas Pulse survey indicates Talarico’s appeal to independents, with a 23-point lead compared to 14 points in June.

Paxton also grapples with political controversies and less fundraising compared to Talarico, further aiding Democrat efforts to build a strong campaign infrastructure in Texas. Despite these challenges, Texas still has a partisan lean toward Republicans, and prediction-market prices can fluctuate with new information.
