Stephanie White Calls for Focus on Basketball Amid Controversies

Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White has expressed frustration over the discussions surrounding the WNBA that aren’t about the game itself. She vocalized her concerns on Tuesday, urging a shift back to the sport.

White, the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year and an original player for the Fever, responded firmly after receiving criticism for her remarks regarding a flagrant foul by DiJonai Carrington on Fever player Sophie Cunningham. White implored for the focus to remain on basketball and not on ongoing distractions.

“The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness that’s trying to hijack our league will not win. It won’t win,” White said passionately, striking the table for emphasis. “We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided. Every day these women put their effort on the line. When they go low, we go high. Love, grace, humility, and kindness will prevail.”

Following her statement, White did not take questions and left immediately. Her team responded with a stellar performance in their game against the New York Liberty, shooting 59% from the field and hitting 79% of their three-point attempts, leading to a 106-92 victory. The Fever have emerged victorious in seven out of their last nine games despite recent controversies.

Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark expressed understanding of White’s pregame reaction but was disappointed by the boos directed at White during her introduction.

“I talked to Steph earlier in the day. We often forget, we’re all human and have feelings, and emotions can be challenging,” Clark noted. “I felt strongly about supporting her after hearing those boos.”

Clark added determination in support of her coach, stating, “There was no way we were losing this game. That’s my head coach, and it upset me that fans booed her.”

The incident occurred after Carrington struck Cunningham during a breakaway layup, resulting in Cunningham falling hard. Cunningham attempted to retaliate but was held back. Carrington was charged with a Flagrant 2, leading to her ejection. Controversy erupted when Carrington allegedly tagged the Fever on social media, mentioning “WHITE PRIVILEGE,” which she later clarified was not her intention.

Cunningham has been vocal about her stance against transgender women in sports, generating both support and opposition. Initially, White remarked that the officials made the correct call, not believing Carrington’s action was deliberate. Criticism ensued, suggesting White was siding with the opponent.

Indiana Lieutenant Gov. Micah Beckwith commented on social media, saying, “The Indiana Fever need to let Stephanie White go. No solid coach would support an opposing player who committed a flagrant foul.”

White addressed the criticism on Tuesday, explaining she hadn’t seen the replay before speaking to reporters and that her view changed after watching it again. She called the foul “egregious.”

“Our players’ safety and success are always a top priority,” White stated emphatically. “I value my relationships with my players deeply. For those questioning my loyalty, know I support my players fully.”

Cunningham received strong support when she entered the game and shared a heartfelt moment with White afterward.

“There’s been noise, but our team is solid,” Cunningham commented. “Coach White loves us, and we appreciate her unwavering support.”

White faced similar scrutiny earlier when Clark was fouled hard in a separate incident, leading to speculation about White’s job security. Despite these challenges, White remains focused on basketball.

“It’s disheartening that we can’t focus on the great basketball being played,” White remarked. “My leadership is rooted in love, grace, humility, and integrity. I won’t always get it right, but I’m human.”
