Efforts to Equalize Women’s World Cup Prize Money

1 hour ago 0

FIFPRO, along with national players’ unions, is pursuing legal guidance to address the issue of unequal prize money between Women’s and Men’s World Cup players. As reported by The Athletic, FIFPRO has sent a proposal to FIFA. This proposal calls for proportional equal prize money for both tournaments, ensuring a minimum of 30% of the prize is guaranteed for those competing in the Women’s FIFA World Cup, reflecting the number of teams and games.

The proposal advocates for equal compensation for equal work, emphasizing the need for parity between female and male players. Numerous players from top-ranked national teams, including Spain, England, and the United States, have endorsed this initiative.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, speaking in 2023, shared a vision of achieving equal prize money for the World Cup tournaments in 2026 and 2027. Although FIFA plans to double the prize pool for 2023, this amount remains significantly less than the $871 million awarded to men’s teams this year.

FIFPRO and FIFA acknowledged their ongoing collaboration in enhancing financial compensation for players. They emphasized the integral role of women’s national team players in influencing these discussions. Both organizations aspire to establish improved terms for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027, including prize money and enhanced financial distribution for participants in qualifying phases.

They are committed to creating optimal conditions for players while promoting the growth and professionalization of women’s football. The ambition extends beyond simply equalizing prize money, aiming for comprehensive support for players.

The upcoming Women’s World Cup will occur in Brazil from June 24 to July 30. The U.S. team aims to reclaim the title after an early exit three years ago.
