The WNBA has recently come under scrutiny for incidents sparking considerable attention. DiJonai Carrington’s forceful foul on Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham stands out in recent months. Carrington’s action led to Cunningham suffering a bloody mouth after being clotheslined. This foul, elevated to a flagrant 2, resulted in Carrington’s immediate ejection.
This incident drew even more attention because it involved Cunningham, who has become controversial due to comments on gender and sports. Carrington intensified the controversy by posting ‘White privilege’ on social media after her ejection, tagging the Indiana Fever.
Some interpreted Carrington’s message to suggest that her ejection was harshly judged due to the racial dynamics between her and Cunningham. Despite backlash, the WNBA has largely remained silent on the matter. Carrington addressed the issue, pointing to her educational background in response to Emmanuel Acho.
“I’ve never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was White privilege (that was your assumption),” she replied on X. “Try exercising your critical thinking skills, I know you studied psych.” She added, “I would never use that term as a rhetorical weapon without proper evidence to substantiate it.”
Though Carrington promised evidence, she hasn’t provided clarity on her claim. Jemele Hill, a sports analyst, tweeted in response to Acho, asserting that it was clear Carrington wasn’t referencing the foul. Hill refrained from elaborating despite requests for clarification.
Officials explained Cunningham’s lack of technical foul by deeming her reaction acceptable given the severity of the contact. Forsberg stated, “After Cunningham was flagrantly fouled, her reaction was deemed acceptable.” Notably, Cunningham has three technical fouls this season, while Carrington has one.
The mystery of what Carrington’s social media post meant continues. Jemele Hill alone suggests understanding the context but hasn’t revealed it. This leaves many questioning the specifics and implications of ‘White privilege’ in this context.
