President Trump Advocates for Permanent Daylight Saving Time

President Donald Trump has called on Congress to approve the Sunshine Protection Act. He argues that the move could decrease murder and robbery rates. Since World War One, the U.S. has adopted a practice known as Daylight Saving Time (DST), where clocks are adjusted forward in warmer months to extend evening daylight. Each fall, clocks revert one hour as the country returns to standard time.

The House of Representatives passed the legislation in mid-July with a vote of 308 in favor and 117 opposed. The Senate is currently reviewing the proposal. If approved, the president has expressed eagerness to sign it into law.

“For many years, the vast Majority of Americans have asked to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, but no Administration has been able to get it properly done, until now,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “I am proud to announce that the House of Representatives has passed the Bill, and it has now gone to the Senate for final approval.”

Trump emphasized the benefits as backed by medical, crime, and economic studies. He highlighted advantages such as reduced robbery and murder rates, fewer car accidents, particularly those with pedestrians, and lower risks for cardiac issues, strokes, and seasonal depression. Additional benefits include safer commutes for children, increased family time, and support for extracurricular activities.

He also noted positive impacts on the sports and fitness sectors, tourism, retail, and restaurants, alongside potential savings on energy bills due to the extra hour of daylight. Trump’s message extended to political unity across Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.

“This is an issue that Republicans, Dumocrats, and Independents can unite behind. I am asking Republican Senators to PASS THE SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT, ASAP,” he stated.
