During the New York gubernatorial debate, Governor Kathy Hochul faced Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman, who urged her to apologize to families affected by crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Hochul, instead, highlighted incidents involving federal immigration agencies.
Blakeman asked Hochul to address families grieving the loss of loved ones due to crimes linked to sanctuary policies. He cited victims and their families who are unable to celebrate life events together, asking Hochul if she would acknowledge these families’ pain and communicate with the parents of Sheridan Gorman, a victim of a tragic shooting.
“Hochul focused on crimes committed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents,” Blakeman remarked.
Sheridan Gorman, a Loyola University Chicago student, was killed in a shooting reportedly involving Jose Medina-Medina, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. Her death has fueled criticism of sanctuary policies limiting cooperation between local authorities and ICE.
Hochul described all crimes as “heartbreaking,” emphasizing her administration’s large investments in law enforcement to lower crime rates statewide. She claimed significant crime reductions, particularly in violent crimes like shootings and murders.
Although pressed by Blakeman, Hochul did not directly apologize for sanctuary policies or confirm if she would return calls from Gorman’s parents. Instead, she referred to separate incidents involving ICE agents and victims such as Renee Good and Alex Pretti, challenging Blakeman’s viewpoint on these fatal shootings.
Social media critics condemned Hochul’s responses, expressing frustration over her perceived lack of concern for victims’ families. Posts from radio hosts and political commentators accused her of evading responsibility and failing to address sanctuary policy issues directly.
The debate marks a critical point in the lead-up to the November election, where voters will choose between Hochul and Blakeman to determine New York’s next governor.
