Confusion Surrounds Starlink Restrictions in Ukraine

1 hour ago 0

Elon Musk’s Starlink faced controversy when Ukraine’s military experienced restricted access to the satellite-based system. A source told The Hill that Starlink services were limited for objects moving over 100 miles per hour, impacting Ukraine’s drones, airplanes, and helicopters.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) urged Musk to address the incident. Musk stated that any restrictions on Starshield, Starlink’s military system, are made by the U.S. military and the president. It’s unclear why Ukraine lost access to the U.S. government-controlled system.

Musk commented on social media, saying, “Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS. Starlink is a commercial service owned and controlled by SpaceX. Usage of Starlink is limited to civilian or defensive activities.”

By Wednesday afternoon, Ukraine’s defense minister said SpaceX was working to restore satellite speeds. Ukraine’s President Zelensky warned of serious consequences following slowdowns in Starlink services.

Additionally, Ukraine’s defense minister shared on social media that SpaceX was reinstating speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, thanking Musk for his attention.
