Wisconsin Governor’s Race: Crowley’s Narrow Primary Victory Sets Up Key Face-Off

David Crowley’s narrow victory in the primary election sets the stage for a significant gubernatorial race in Wisconsin. Crowley, a moderate Democrat, managed to overcome Francesca Hong, the favored democratic socialist candidate, in a dramatic contest. He now faces Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, making this an ideal match-up for moderate Democrats as Trump’s approval ratings decline.

Crowley’s victory surprised experts, who had long seen Hong as the front-runner. His triumph means Tiffany must now prepare to face a Democrat with a reputation for bipartisan collaboration, especially in Milwaukee, the state’s largest Democratic voting base.

After the primary win, Crowley focused on Tiffany’s alignment with Trump. He hosted a unity event with Hong and other supporters, emphasizing the need for a broad coalition to tackle Tiffany’s backing of Trump’s agenda. Crowley urged Democrats to shift their focus on defeating what he described as a ‘MAGA extremist’.

Former Republican Governor Scott Walker suggested that Tiffany might find it easier to distance himself from Trump due to the nature of the gubernatorial race compared to a congressional campaign. Conversely, Dale Schultz, former Republican state Senate Majority Leader opposed to Trump, indicated that Crowley’s candidacy would challenge Tiffany to address key issues such as affordability and healthcare.

Tiffany’s base lies in Wisconsin’s rural north woods, a conservative region where Trump won in 2016 and 2024, yet lost in 2020. Crowley’s razor-thin victory further underscores Wisconsin’s reputation for closely contested elections. As Democrats eye a potential political trifecta in Wisconsin, they aim to maintain control of the governor’s office and attempt to flip the Legislature.

Tiffany initiated his general election campaign by associating Crowley with Hong, despite Crowley’s efforts to highlight Tiffany’s ties to Trump. The challenge remains for Crowley to engage young voters who largely backed Hong in the primary.

Interestingly, Crowley’s victory arrived after he had initially withdrawn from the race, citing a lack of viable path to success. However, he returned and secured support from prominent Democrats, including Governor Tony Evers. Crowley’s background, marked by poverty and challenges faced on Milwaukee’s north side, resonates deeply with voters.

Crowley’s historic nomination as the first Black major party gubernatorial candidate in Wisconsin signals a potential milestone. He aims to become the state’s first Black governor and among a select few Black governors in U.S. history. Crowley acknowledges the significance of this achievement but emphasizes that his focus remains on fulfilling his duties and ensuring future opportunities for others.
