Trump Secures Release of Marine Veteran from Russia

The Trump administration successfully secured the release of Marine veteran Robert Gilman from a Russian prison without engaging in a prisoner swap. This marked a shift in U.S. hostage diplomacy and a decline in the wrongful detentions of American citizens overseas. Former hostage negotiator Dan O’Shea examined the negotiation breakthrough, underscoring that Gilman’s release was achieved without an exchange.

Photos and video revealed Marine veteran Robert Gilman back in the United States after his release from Russian custody. Gilman, arrested on January 17, 2022, in Voronezh, Russia, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was released on humanitarian grounds after spending 1,666 days behind bars. President Donald Trump announced that Gilman would arrive at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., adding that Gilman requested a cheeseburger upon landing.

Sebastian Gorka, a deputy assistant to the president, shared that the Marine was back on U.S. soil. Gorka posted a video of the aircraft stopping and mentioned that Steve Witkoff delivered cheeseburgers and milkshakes to Gilman. Gorka humorously noted that he snuck Gilman a cigar for when he is fully recovered. Additionally, a member of the White House team gifted Gilman a USMC flag, emphasizing that no American was left behind.

Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, expressed his gratitude to President Trump for bringing Americans home. He shared a picture of himself with Gorka and Gilman aboard the plane. Witkoff praised Gilman as a patriot who served with honor and highlighted the exceptional leadership of the President in securing the release of other Americans held in Russia, such as Marc Fogel and Ksenia Karelina.

Gilman’s 2022 conviction was for assaulting a police officer, leading to a three-and-a-half-year sentence. His troubles worsened in 2024 with further convictions for attacking a prison inspector and other staff. In December 2025, a regional court extended his sentence for another assault. Despite these convictions, the U.S. State Department considered Gilman a wrongful detainee.

Gilman became the third U.S. Marine imprisoned in Russia over the past decade, following Paul Whelan and Trevor Reed’s detentions in 2018 and 2019. Both Whelan and Reed were released in prisoner swaps. Trump acknowledged discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin resulting in Gilman’s release on a humanitarian basis without an exchange. Gilman’s mother, Nancy, accompanied him and will soon reunite with their family.
