Incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
A man lost his life after he was attacked by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in northern England on Saturday. South Yorkshire Police reported that the incident occurred at approximately 1:35 p.m. when the man entered the tiger enclosure. Despite emergency responders’ efforts to save him, the man succumbed to injuries at the scene.
The man’s family has been notified and is receiving support from specialist officers. Police clarified that the tiger involved was not harmed and posed no threat to the public. Authorities emphasized that the animal remains inside its enclosure and dispelled rumors concerning its condition.
“Regarding rumors surrounding the condition of the tiger, the animal was uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident, and there is no wider risk to the public,” police stated.
The “Land of the Tigers” attraction at the wildlife park, featuring Amur tigers, opened in 2011. A 300-meter-long raised walkway provides visitors with views of the tigers.
Park Closed for Investigation
Following the tragedy, the wildlife park evacuated visitors and announced it would remain closed on Sunday. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and police have urged the public against sharing videos of the attack seen on social media.
Social media footage allegedly shows the man before being attacked by the tiger. Witnesses reported that the man seemed agitated prior to entering the tiger’s habitat, but authorities have not officially disclosed details of the circumstances.
The park characterized the attack as a “serious incident” and assured that emergency response procedures were promptly activated.
“Our emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and emergency services are currently attending the scene,” the park’s statement read. “The safety and wellbeing of visitors, staff and animals remain a top priority.”
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service dispatched multiple resources to handle the situation, including two ambulances, a physician, and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The investigation into the man’s death is still in progress.
Similar Incidents in U.S. Zoos
While incidents like these are uncommon, there have been notable cases where individuals breached barriers at U.S. zoo big-cat exhibits.
In 2012, David Villalobos entered a tiger enclosure at New York City’s Bronx Zoo after jumping from the Wild Asia Monorail and crossing barriers. The tiger attacked him, resulting in severe injuries. He survived after zoo staff intervened and later faced trespass charges.
A comparable incident took place in December 2021 at the Naples Zoo in Florida. River Rosenquist, employed by an outside cleaning contractor, entered an unauthorized area and interacted with a tiger through the fencing. A sheriff’s deputy shot the tiger to free Rosenquist, whose serious injuries did not result in criminal charges against him.
Recent Events at Saint Louis and New Jersey Zoos
In August, an individual climbed a fence at the Saint Louis Zoo’s Big Cat Country exhibit, sitting on a barrier above a tiger habitat before returning safely to the public area. Zoo officials stated that they were looking into potential safety improvements after no injuries were reported.
In 2024, a woman in New Jersey faced charges after climbing a fence and reaching toward a tiger at Cohanzick Zoo. She was charged with trespassing following the aggressive response from the tiger.
