Senate Investigation into Child Safety on Roblox

A bipartisan investigation focusing on child safety issues in the gaming platform Roblox has been initiated by two U.S. senators. Concerns center around explicit content and alleged links to real-world child abuse.

Senators Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) addressed a letter to Roblox CEO David Baszucki. They stated that the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism has opened a child safety investigation into Roblox. The senators questioned Roblox’s promise of providing a safe digital environment for children, considering recent public reports.

Roblox has been criticized for its safety measures, particularly regarding age verification and content moderation. Legal actions in various states allege that the platform lacks adequate oversight, exposing minors to harmful content.

The senators highlighted instances where predators might have utilized the platform to target minors, engaging in grooming or sharing explicit material. They accused Roblox of prioritizing revenue over child safety, demanding the company preserve records and respond to over a dozen document requests.

Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, responded that the platform is dedicated to maintaining safety and looks forward to demonstrating their protective measures.

Roblox has introduced changes to its safety protocols, including new age verification techniques using advanced technology and government-issued identification.
