On Sunday, Ukraine launched a significant drone offensive across Russia, resulting in at least six deaths. This marks one of Kyiv’s most extensive aerial assaults during the ongoing conflict. Over the past year, Ukraine has increased its attacks on Russian targets, utilizing long-range missiles and a multitude of drones. These assaults focus on military industries and energy sites.
The drone strikes have impacted major depots belonging to Wildberries, a Russian online retail giant, destroying merchandise worth billions of dollars. Such attacks are bringing the war closer to the Russian populace, nearly four and a half years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Concurrently, Ukraine faced Russian attacks, including drone strikes that demolished homes and set fire to Kyiv’s prominent book market.
Russian drones targeted a woman and her 9-year-old son at their home, highlighting the surge in Ukrainian civilian casualties.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated they destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. About 600 drones were detected heading towards Moscow, with Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reporting a third in the Moscow region. An 83-year-old man died when a Ukrainian drone struck a home in this region, as confirmed by Governor Andrey Vorobyov.
Additionally, a Ukrainian assault triggered a fire at a Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk. A drone attack hit three towns in Russia’s Rostov region, resulting in five fatalities and causing structural damage, as reported by Governor Yury Slyusar. This attack involved more than 150 drones, damaging homes, a railway station, and igniting a forest fire.
Russian Strikes on Ukraine
A Russian missile strike in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, claimed two lives and injured 14 others, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on social media. Another person died in Sumy due to Russian attacks. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, the largest steel producer in Ukraine, confirmed damage to its facilities leading to partial operational suspension.
In the Zaporizhzhia region in southern Ukraine, a man and woman died when their home was hit. Ivan Fedorov, the local military administration head, shared this information. Fires caused by Russian attacks spread through Kyiv, injuring six people and consuming a major book market near Pochaina metro station. Firefighters battled the flames, which released thick black smoke over the city.
Zelenskyy remarked on Russia’s targeting of civilian infrastructure where their ballistic missiles reach. On Sunday, Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated they struck a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and several military-industrial sites in Kyiv. Targets included a facility manufacturing Ukraine’s Flamingo missiles, crucial for long-range strikes against Russia.
NATO Involvement in Drone Incident
Romania’s Ministry of National Defense reported that a Spanish F-18 fighter jet intercepted and destroyed a drone entering Romanian airspace. Detection systems noted the intrusion at 4:44 a.m. approximately 24 kilometers from Galati, near the Moldova border.
The F-18 successfully shot down the drone at 05:01 after establishing radar contact with the target and receiving approval to engage.
Later, drone debris was identified in the Black Sea near Constanta. The drone’s origin remains unspecified. This event follows earlier incidents where Romanian pilots shot down multiple drones over several days.
Since Russia launched its full invasion of Ukraine, Romania has documented numerous drone-related incidents, some resulting in crashes and explosions within its borders. Acting Foreign Minister Oana Toiu mentioned an increase in Spanish deployment to Romania at the joint request of Romania and NATO to strengthen the Eastern Flank, marking the fourth such deployment by Spain.
