In a significant law enforcement operation, 15 individuals were arrested, and seven vehicles were confiscated following a suspected street takeover at a Long Island roadway early Saturday. The Suffolk County Police Department reported that its Street Takeover Task Force obtained information on the planned event through intelligence work and social media monitoring prior to Friday night, August 14.
The task force discovered that a group intended to organize a street takeover in Suffolk County, a region spanning about 1,000 square miles in the eastern two-thirds of Long Island. Police monitored the group’s movements across several locations throughout the night.
Viral teen takeovers have been causing chaos nationwide, with malls, beaches, and restaurants becoming battlegrounds.
According to police, individuals engaged in stunts such as donuts and burnouts, drawing spectators during the alleged street takeover in Medford, New York, early Saturday, August 15, 2026.
Suffolk County Police Department: “Numerous vehicles effectively closed down the roadway on Sawgrass Drive by driving recklessly, performing stunts in the roadway, and doing donuts and burnouts.”
Police initially dispersed gatherings near Commack Road and Sunrise Highway in Islip before moving to Route 112 and Main Street in Patchogue. The authorities then caught up with the group around 12:50 a.m. near Woodside Avenue and Sawgrass Drive in Medford, finding numerous vehicles obstructing the road.
The police operation led to the arrest of 15 people, the impoundment of seven vehicles, and the issuance of multiple traffic tickets, according to the department.
Those arrested hailed from various communities across Long Island and New York City. Fourteen of the 15 individuals faced charges of participating in an unlawful speed contest and spectating an unlawful speed contest.
This crackdown follows another large street takeover that disrupted Suffolk County a few weeks earlier. During that event, at least 200 ATVs, dirt bikes, and motorcycles overwhelmed roads in Hauppauge and Brentwood, necessitating another significant police response.
In that instance, three individuals were arrested, and 10 vehicles were impounded, as reported by Suffolk County Police.
Cities are preparing for potential holiday weekend teen takeovers, posing risks to bystanders, as a former prosecutor has warned.
