Chicago Cubs Face Roster Challenges Amid Injuries and Performance Issues

2 hours ago 0

The Chicago Cubs found themselves facing roster challenges before Sunday’s final game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. The spotlight intensified when shortstop Dansby Swanson left the game after experiencing tightness on his left side. This injury raised concerns about a potential stint on the injured list.

Swanson’s departure led to rookie James Triantos stepping in as a second baseman, pushing Nico Hoerner to cover shortstop duties. Hoerner will remain at shortstop during Swanson’s recovery. Another rookie, Pedro Ramírez, may see more play at second base. Ramírez also saw his debut at first base, offering Michael Busch some rest. The Cubs lack a reliable backup first baseman, necessitating flexibility in roster placements.

“First base is a spot where we’re a little concerned about what’s next should something happen to Michael,” manager Craig Counsell explained. “We need to get somebody comfortable there as a contingency.”

Swanson’s injury wasn’t the only issue the Cubs tackled on Sunday. The team activated Edward Cabrera, their significant offseason acquisition, from the injured list. Acquired from the Miami Marlins in exchange for prospects Owen Caissie and Cristian Hernández, Cabrera returned to the rotation. Javier Assad, a versatile pitcher, moved to Iowa to make room on the 26-man roster.

Despite Cabrera’s return, he struggled in the game. Giving up seven earned runs on six hits spiked his ERA to 5.68, marking a downturn since his debut season in 2021. He cited a blister on his right middle finger as a hindrance during the game. The blister’s impact was evident when he lost command in the fourth inning, walking several batters and allowing more runs.

With Cabrera’s struggles, David Peterson has shifted to a bullpen role, although his 4.19 ERA suggests starting potential. The Cubs have alternatives like Assad and Colin Rea for starting roles. Cabrera’s blister won’t justify skipping future starts. According to him, “It’s a blister… I have had those in the past. In my mind, I’m not going to miss a start over a blister.”

The Cubs anticipated some difficulties with Cabrera’s return. Continual command issues have cast doubt on his role in the rotation. Counsell indicated they would re-evaluate Cabrera’s position. The team’s ability to optimize its lineup with options like Peterson, Assad, and Rea remains crucial.
