Supreme Court Denies Trump’s Appeal in E. Jean Carroll Case

1 hour ago 0

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a $5 million jury verdict. This verdict found Trump guilty of sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll at a department store in New York during the mid-1990s. It also included Trump’s defamation of Carroll.

Trump’s legal team requested that the Supreme Court reconsider their prior decision not to hear his appeal. However, the court dismissed these requests along with several other petitions. It is rare for the court to grant reconsideration.

Trump settled the judgment immediately after the Supreme Court initially declined to take up the appeal in June. Both Trump and the Justice Department are seeking to overturn a separate Carroll verdict for $83 million. They argue that Trump is immune from such lawsuits due to comments made in 2019 while he was president. The court has yet to issue a decision on this appeal.

Carroll is a seasoned advice columnist and former TV talk show host. In a 2023 trial, she provided testimony alleging that Trump transformed a friendly encounter in the 1990s into a violent incident in the Bergdorf Goodman dressing room. Bergdorf Goodman is located across from Trump Tower in Manhattan.

The jury determined Trump was accountable for defaming Carroll, following his denial of her accusations in 2022. Trump has consistently denied the allegations. The Associated Press usually refrains from identifying individuals claiming sexual assault unless they publicly disclose their identity, as Carroll has done.
