Joshua Báez Shines in Unforgettable MLB Debut in Chicago

Joshua Báez made his mark in the history of baseball with a stunning debut at Wrigley Field. Grinning broadly, he greeted over thirty friends and family who witnessed his major-league debut. For the St. Louis Cardinals, his performance was nothing short of sensational.

He worked as a DoorDash delivery driver to support himself, promising to honor his late father by making it to the majors.

After the game, Cardinals manager Oli Marmol hugged Báez’s mother, Yris, acknowledging her role in his success. Marmol emphasized, “No one gets here on their own.”

The journey to the majors was marked by perseverance. Despite appearing as an overnight success, Báez’s path was anything but short. Scouted during the difficult pandemic year of 2020, his talent stood out. Selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2021 draft, he had to overcome the challenge of a large strike zone and a high strikeout rate.

A swinging overhaul in 2024, coordinated by Brock Hammit, fixed these issues. His new swing path optimized contact without sacrificing his power. After months of intensive work, his confidence and performance rebounded.

By the end of 2025, Báez had secured a championship with Double-A Springfield. And in 2026, he re-established himself as a top prospect, marked by a debut characterized by three varied pitch types sent soaring over different parts of the ballpark.

The Cardinals organization, under new leadership, is polishing its development strategies. New figures like Chaim Bloom and Rob Cerfolio aim to revamp the minor leagues, highlighting players like Báez in the process.

With early signs of a revitalized franchise, many players have become breakout stars. The team’s emergence has accelerated under Bloom’s oversight, potentially shortening the expected rebuilding phase.

Manager Marmol and coach Daniel Descalso have high hopes for Báez.
