U.S. special envoy Jared Kushner issued a strong warning to Hamas, demanding disarmament in Gaza or face an Israeli military response to conclude the conflict. Speaking to Fox News, Kushner highlighted diplomatic efforts in Egypt and Israel to advance President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace roadmap despite continued clashes.
Israel continues its airstrikes and territorial claims in Gaza despite a ceasefire agreement from October, while Hamas remains defiant about relinquishing its arms.
Diplomatic Meetings and Commitments
Kushner initiated discussions with Hamas in Cairo alongside the National Committee, representing the new Palestinian governance. During the meeting, Hamas reiterated its promise to abide by Trump’s 20-point peace initiative and a specific 15-point roadmap focused on disarmament.
“Time will tell whether that’s going to be implemented,” Kushner said, expressing cautious optimism.
He emphasized the U.S. will closely monitor Hamas’ actions to ensure they genuinely pursue peace; failing which, it would bolster U.S. support for Israel’s definitive actions.
Challenges Ahead
Kushner’s warning occurred after only his second known meeting with Hamas. He acknowledged the challenge of trusting a group with a violent history, yet noted positive expressions during the talks.
President Trump urged swift action on a U.S.-mediated proposal to cease the Gaza conflict, focused on achieving a ceasefire, demilitarization, and reconstruction.
Kushner also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to discuss the roadmap’s timeline. Key disagreements persist over the sequence of demilitarization and reconstruction efforts.
Progress and Outlook
Despite tensions, Kushner expressed hope after constructive discussions with Israeli officials. He reiterated that U.S. support for Gaza’s reconstruction hinges on its demilitarization.
“We will not allow Gaza to be rebuilt until demilitarization occurs,” Kushner stated, emphasizing non-restriction on Israel’s defense rights.
Kushner outlined urgency in deweaponization, with potential progress in 30 days and further steps within 90 days. Successful disarmament would signify a major security victory for Israel.
The Ongoing Conflict
The conflict stems from Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and numerous hostages, sustaining nearly three years of hostilities.
Kushner acknowledged the deep emotional toll on Israel and the broader region, stressing a collective exhaustion from prolonged conflict and a readiness for change.
He remained confident in President Trump’s capacity to forge a durable peace agreement, citing Trump’s previous successes in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
