President Donald Trump had a contentious exchange with CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes in the Oval Office. Holmes, seeking a follow-up on a question regarding South Korea, faced pushback from the President who labeled her ‘disrespectful.’ During the interaction, Trump asked Holmes to remain quiet.
CNN responded to the incident on Monday after the White House’s rapid response team criticized Holmes for referencing remarks by Sen. Jon Ossoff. The Georgia Senator had suggested that Trump preferred leisure activities over presidential duties. In response, Trump compared Ossoff to Pee-wee Herman.
The White House-run Rapid Response 47 account on platform X criticized Holmes for bringing up Ossoff’s comments, which led to online speculation about an inappropriate relationship between Trump and Natalie Harp, a White House aide.
“[Holmes] is a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession,” the account stated.
The White House emphasized the gravity of her question, suggesting future embarrassment for her children if they encountered her words. They chastised her for the perceived vindictive nature of her questions.
CNN defended Holmes, asserting her reputation as a respected journalist. The network highlighted that Holmes performed her duty by posing a relevant question to the President.
“Public officials can challenge reporting they disagree with, but personal attacks on journalists are inconsistent with a free press. We stand firmly behind Kristen,” CNN stated.
The episode unfolded against the backdrop of Trump’s meeting in the Oval Office with Ryder Williams, a lifeguard who heroically rescued Nathaniel Rai. In that setting, Trump confronted Holmes again, telling her to ‘be quiet.’
In a separate encounter, as Holmes attempted another question, Trump accused her of being fake news. He termed her inquiries as boisterous and unfounded.
