Honor System Threatens Election Integrity, Warns Fox News Contributor

Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe has expressed concern over significant weaknesses in U.S. elections. Speaking on ‘The Big Weekend Show,’ Boothe criticized the current dependency on an honor system for verifying citizenship. She emphasized that safeguarding voter rolls is essential to maintain trust in election integrity.

Carlos Felipe Jaramillo-Grajales, a criminal illegal alien from Colombia, was sentenced to three years imprisonment for identity theft and falsifying his citizenship status. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that he used these fraudulent claims to engage in U.S. elections over two decades.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin commented, “Because of his fraud, Jaramillo-Grajales secured a driver’s license and voted in our elections.” Mullin affirmed DHS’s commitment to election security, highlighting that only Americans should select American leaders.

The challenge comes as Washington lawmakers debate the necessity of new legislation to enforce voter verification. This underscores the lengths to which some noncitizens have gone to acquire state identification. Secretary Mullin previously pointed out a pattern of noncitizen voter registrations in a letter to secretaries of state in California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. His findings indicated that as many as 190,830 noncitizens were registered to vote in California alone.

Jaramillo-Grajales began his scheme by using a U.S. citizen’s name, date of birth, and Social Security number to obtain a passport in March 2003. This enabled him to obtain a Florida driver’s license and register to vote. According to DHS, he participated in the 2020 election and others.

Investigators noted that Jaramillo-Grajales exploited the stolen identity for other objectives. Homeland Security Investigations special agent Tim Hemker remarked, “This criminal illegal alien spent years exploiting a stolen identity to obtain government documents and claim benefits.” In one case, using the false identity, he secured lawful permanent residence for his fiancée in June 2017, who later became his wife.

The DHS framed Jaramillo-Grajales’s sentencing as part of a broader initiative to tackle illegal aliens falsifying information to vote or gain U.S. benefits. They referenced similar incidents, such as that of Marian Chariton from Slovakia, who illegally voted in New Jersey’s 2022 election, and Jose Ceballos from Mexico, who faced charges for falsely claiming citizenship in Kansas.

“Thanks to the dedication of HSI and our federal partners, this criminal has been removed from our communities and will eventually be deported,” said Mullin.

The investigation into Jaramillo-Grajales’s case involved multiple agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), and the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General. The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Arnold B. Corsmeier.
