Dr. Anthony Fauci faces ongoing scrutiny from Congress following his recent Senate hearing. The House Oversight Committee is raising questions about why Fauci’s diaries and cellphone from the COVID-19 pandemic period were not submitted to Congress until now, attributing the oversight to former President Joe Biden’s top health official.
Committee’s Concerns
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., emphasized a request made in November 2023 by House Republicans. They called on former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to release any records from Fauci containing terms like “COVID-19,” “gain-of-function,” and “Wuhan.” Comer expressed concerns that Becerra either withheld information or failed to conduct a proper search.
Fauci’s Diaries and Public Response
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has since transferred Fauci’s COVID-era diaries and phone to Senators Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Ron Johnson, R-Wis. The release incited criticism, with many accusing Fauci of reveling in fame during a period marked by restrictive regulations.
Over 1,000 pages from the diaries were made public, revealing Fauci’s reflections as pandemic science evolved. They also include his thoughts on gaining fame during the pandemic. In a statement to the Oversight Committee’s pandemic subcommittee in June 2024, Fauci shifted responsibility for specific guidelines to the CDC.
Certain diary sections indicate Fauci’s involvement in discussions about school closures with political leaders. A 2020 entry mentions Fauci persuading then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to close schools.
Senate Hearing and Further Inquiries
During his Senate hearing in late July, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment multiple times in response to queries regarding the pandemic’s consequences and diary revelations. Comer has since questioned Becerra to ascertain if any Biden officials influenced his decision on document submission. Becerra is currently a gubernatorial candidate in California.
The House Oversight Committee’s concerns follow a guilty plea from David Morens, a former Fauci advisor. Morens admitted to conspiracy charges related to concealing COVID-19 records.
Fauci acknowledged in a 2024 House hearing that it was improper for Morens to edit certain press releases and letters related to grant funding. This admission highlighted potential breaches of federal health policy.
